It’s been almost a year since the launch of the current MegsRadio web app. I’m David Dorsey, the lead front-end developer for MegsRadio. This older version of the web app will always hold a special place in my heart. But… everyone else is ready to move on.
Yeah! New web app coming soon!
One of the main goals of MegsRadio is not only to help users discover their local music scene via online streaming, but also through local concerts, festivals, etc. The event recommendation capabilities of MegsRadio took a back seat in the current web app; to remedy this, a fully redesigned web app is in production. It will feature an increased emphasis on bringing users to local music events and will tailor their listening experience more towards the shows they enjoy in addition to the music they stream.
One of the biggest changes that this new version of the web app will bring with it is a complete makeover of what users see when browsing upcoming events. The new web app will feature a map-based interface with custom markers at local music venues containing information about upcoming shows and events. In order to determine how to best lay out this new front-end, an in-depth analysis of existing recommendation services and map-based interfaces has been conducted. This analysis focused on the front-end choices made by industry leading web applications – specifically how they build user trust, how they are transparent with data related to their recommendations, and how to generally lay out an aesthetically pleasing interface while presenting all relevant data.
Okay, things are starting to get a bit wordy and technical. Let’s make it easier; here’s a concept sketch of the new events interface:
So pretty! Here’s a few things you can expect to see in the new interface:
- Full screen events page
- A map with markers placed at each of the local venues with upcoming events
- A menu with filters to help you find the events best suited for you
- % Match – our prediction in how likely you are to enjoy this event (based off your listening habits and ratings. The more you use MegsRadio, the better we’ll be able to help you find shows!)
Other changes you can expect in this new web app: easier to navigate, no more tiny menus, fewer (or maybe no more?) weird bugs and problems. This is all really exciting stuff! My heart is racing even as I write this! Woooo!!! Our goal is to have this new web app ready to go within the next couple months, so stay tuned for more updates!
